How Family Portraits Boost Your Child’s Self-Esteem | Family Photographer Denver Colorado

One of the hidden but powerful aspects of family photography that moms and most family photographers rarely consider, is how it can help us raise children with stronger confidence in their own worth and abilities. Psychologists and experts have done some work in recent decades exploring this area. But how can family photography, specifically family portraits, help boost a child’s self-esteem?

I think it is really important to show our families as a family unit. It’s helpful for children to see themselves as a valued and important part of their family. When a child sees a family portrait with them included, they say to themselves: ‘This is why I belong here. This is where I come from.”

When It Comes To Having The Greatest Positive Impact For Your Child, Which is Better, Digital Images or Paper Prints?

Rather than print and display family photographs, families are increasingly enjoying their images in a digital form. Either a cell phone, a laptop, or simply on social media. But does an image on a computer screen have the same impact for helping families boost a child’s self-esteem? I personally think our family photographs belong displayed up on the walls of our home for everyone to see. It fills my heart with joy just seeing our portraits in giant canvases up on the walls in every room… our portraits in prints displayed on our fridge so I can see them when I’m cooking dinner each night. All our picture frames filled with sweet family members near and far… and those that are sadly not with us anymore. Photographs are very powerful, at any age.

I think placing a our family photo somewhere in home where children can see them every day without having to turn on a device or click around on a computer to find it really hits home for that child and gives them a sense of reassurance and comfort. They have a certainty about them and a protecting quality that nurtures a child. It lets them know where they are in this world and that they are loved and cared for deeply.

There is something very powerful in touching your fingers to an actual print. Touching the photograph where a face is smiling… it is the same thing as touching a book when you read it. There’s a lot of stimulation of the brain when you have that sensory experience. That is a bit lost in the move to digital these days. You are touching a keyboard, mouse or a touchscreen but you are not touching the image.

Experts recommend having photographs of your child with your family placed in their bedroom so it can be one of the last things they see before they fall asleep and the first thing they may see when they wake up the next morning.

“It says we love you and care about you. You’re important.”

Mark your calendar for May 7th and join us for our Mommy and Me Mini Sessions in a beautiful field setting. We will be keeping these simple with a couple props and super cute floral crowns for the girls. Our sessions will be capturing the love between mommy and her babies. If you have a special lovie or a book you love to read to your little one at night, bring that along with you too:)

For outfits we will be going for spring casual… matching solid color spring dresses, (patterned or solid) maxi dresses or skirts with tank tops for the girls ….  blue jeans and a simple t-shirt or shorts and a collard short for boys. Try to steer clear of character prints on the children’s clothing, or busy patterns, for a classic and timeless look…. We would love to help you style your session and choose wardrobe that works best 🙂
